Travel from San Francisco to Napa Valley

Are you a resident or a visitor of the Bay area? If so, San Francisco to Napa Valley is only a 49 mile drive so you should certainly visit the beautiful wine country. Especially if you want to escape the city for a while, you will benefit from an excursion into this lush and tranquil paradise. Let us take a look at some of the reasons why you should make the journey.

San Francisco to Napa Valley Wineries

When making the journey from San Francisco to Napa Valley, there will likely be one thing at the forefront of your mind: Wine!

Napa Valley is known as the ‘wine country’ after all, and it is at the heart of California’s wine-growing industry. Nothing can beat a sip of wine while standing in the midst of the Napa Valley countryside, so you owe it to yourself to visit one or more of the region’s wineries.

But where do you start? There are over 400 wineries that are open for tasting and there are around 90 tasting rooms too. Well, you will certainly be spoiled for choice but we definitely recommend Castello di Amorosa. This 13th century inspired castle is the perfect setting for a spot of wine tasting and has some breathtaking views from the top of its turrets. We recommend the Chateau Montelena Winery too. Founded in 1882, it has the look and feel of an Old World French winery and may be familiar to you if have seen the 2008 movie ‘Bottle Shock.’

For these and other must-visit places around the region, check out our guide to Napa Valley wineries. You probably won’t have time to visit them all but handpick those that tickle your taste palate and your fancy!

San Francisco to Napa Valley Restaurants

A trip from San Franciso to Napa Valley offers so much more than a glass (or two) of wine! There are some truly fabulous places to eat too, from small specialist locations to some popular, highly-awarded brands. Of course, because these restaurants are located in the heart of the wine country, you will be able to sample many home-grown wines when eating your meal.

For a high-end dining experience, consider Auberge du Soleil. This award-winning restaurant is known for its spas, decor, and some truly great cuisine. Duck, veal, and Wagyu beef are all on the menu and you have a choice of over 15,000 wines to go with your meal. If you want  something a little different, try La Taberna. Made to look and feel like a Spanish tavern, you can enjoy a range of Spanish foods, including a delicious fresh-octopus dish. Other restaurants include Ad-Hoc which is known for its family-style meals, and Sam’s Social Club if you’re in the
mood for a pizza.

There are plenty of wonderful places to eat so it all depends on your personal tastes and requirements. To learn more, check out our guide to Napa Valley restaurants and mark them on your itinerary.
